The Change Gap
When Clients Know Better but Still Can’t Do Differently
A CBT-Informed Coaching Framework for Transforming Thoughts, Reactions and Behaviors
Your Client Knows What They Need to Change. So Why Can’t They Do It?
They know they need better boundaries.
They know they people-please, overthink, avoid conflict, try to control everything, or push themselves to achieve more and more.
They may have spent years doing personal development work. They understand their childhood patterns, recognize their limiting beliefs, and can even explain exactly why they react the way they do.
And yet, when the moment comes, the same reaction takes over.
- Someone is disappointed in them, and they immediately feel guilty.
- Someone criticizes them, and they become defensive.
- Someone asks for another favour, and despite promising themselves they would say no, they hear themselves saying yes.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the thing: Understanding a pattern doesn’t automatically give us the ability to change it.
And that’s where so many clients get stuck.
Welcome to The Change Gap
The Change Gap is the space between knowing what needs to change and being able to respond differently when it actually matters.
As coaches, we’re often very good at helping clients develop awareness, uncover beliefs, and understand their patterns.
But what happens when awareness isn’t enough?
How do we help clients interrupt an automatic reaction, recognize what’s really driving it, and develop the ability to choose a different response?
That’s exactly what this two-day training is designed to teach you.
You’ll learn a practical, CBT-informed coaching approach to help your clients move beyond insight and into meaningful behavioural change.
What You’ll Learn
1. The 3 Developmental Stages of the Brain & the 10 Inner Saboteurs
A model for understanding how brain development shapes our responses and the protective patterns that drive our behaviour.
Why does one client constantly seek approval while another needs to control everything? Why do some avoid difficult conversations while others become perfectionists, overachievers, or relentless overthinkers?
You’ll explore the three developmental stages of the brain and how they influence the way we perceive situations, process emotions, and respond to challenges.
You’ll also learn to recognize the 10 Inner Saboteurs and understand the protective purpose behind patterns such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, avoidance, control, and overachievement.
Rather than simply trying to eliminate these behaviours, you’ll learn to recognize what they’re trying to accomplish, why they keep taking over, and what your client needs in order to begin responding differently.
2. The Change Gap Framework
A step-by-step coaching model for moving from awareness to transformation.
Learn how to guide clients through the process of change by exploring:
- What triggers their automatic reactions
- Which protective pattern takes over
- The underlying beliefs driving their responses
- How the brain’s developmental stages influence their behaviours
- How to turn new understanding into a different behavioural response
You’ll walk away with a structured coaching process you can begin integrating into your sessions immediately.
Because here’s the challenge:
It’s one thing for your client to understand their pattern during a coaching session.
It’s another thing entirely to recognize it when they’re emotionally activated.
You’ll learn how to help clients notice when an old protective response has taken over, create space between the trigger and their reaction, and practise choosing a more conscious, grounded response.
Because real change isn’t just about what your client understands during your session.
It’s about what they can do differently outside of it.
3. The Boundaries Framework
Our practical case study: From knowing you need a boundary to actually setting one.
We’ll bring everything together using one of the most common challenges clients bring to coaching:
“I know I need to set boundaries, but I just can’t seem to do it.”
We’ll explore why setting boundaries can feel so difficult, even when someone knows they’re necessary.
You’ll learn how to coach through the fear of disappointing others, the guilt that follows saying no, the need for approval, and the underlying beliefs that keep old patterns in place.
Then, we’ll apply the complete Change Gap process to help clients move from understanding their boundary challenges to actually setting and maintaining boundaries with greater confidence, clarity, and less guilt or overexplaining.
And because the framework goes far beyond boundaries, you’ll discover how to apply the same process to other recurring challenges, including people-pleasing, perfectionism, avoidance, control, and overthinking.
This Is Not Another Course About Understanding the Pattern.
It’s about knowing what to do with the pattern when it shows up.
No ThetaHealing®. No digging.
This is a practical, CBT-informed coaching training that brings together thoughts, beliefs, emotional reactions, protective behaviours, and conscious choice.
You’ll leave with new coaching models, practical tools, and a clearer process for helping clients translate awareness into action.
Who Is This Course For?
This training is designed for coaches, healers, and personal development geeks who want to expand their ability to support themselves and clients stuck in recurring patterns.
Especially when your client says:
- “I know what I should do, but I can’t seem to do it.”
- “I’ve worked on this so many times. Why does it keep happening?”
- “I understand where it comes from, but I still react the same way.”
- “I know I need to say no, but I feel so guilty.”
- “I wish I could stop overthinking and just trust myself.”
If you’ve ever wondered how to help a client move beyond another breakthrough in awareness and toward a meaningful change in behaviour, this course is for you.
